Any suggestions??

I'm making a baby blanket with a bunch of stitch samples in it- I'm choosing them so it will be flat and smooth mostly. My first attempt at the blanket was on too small of needles and with too much st st in it. Any suggestions for other st patterns that lay flat and smooth? So far I've used: garter st, seed st… Continue

Baby Shower Attendance Survived... Gifts Well Received...

So my DSIL is due sometime in January- and I've been working hard on a little sweater set for the baby. Started on a blanket, but it will be frogged and restarted due to technical difficulties... The star of the day is a design by my own DH. The father of the baby to come plays hockey on a team- so hubs decided the baby needed a hockey related toy. He'd been talking about it for a week or two, with not too much excitement by me. Oops. :) Thursday morning, DH started drawing schematics, so I knew… Continue

Long trip... but I'm finally home!!

I just got back from a looong trip from NE KS all the way to visit my DB and SIL and nephew in NW New Mexico. On the way down- we took the longer miles, better road and angled down and stopped for the night in Liberal KS. This state is so long kitty corner style! We didn't leave here til late in the aftern… Continue

New Local Knitting Group Needs Another Teacher ASAP...

I have been a very lazy blogger. Too much on my plate, I guess. Plus, I always think about what I'll write when I'm at work and it sounds so witty and fascinating, and then when I actually start typing, it sounds to me like I'm half illiterate! Not to bother! Knit on ye merry gentlewomen!

Anyway... I have been knitting up a storm. I haven't blogged since I joined the Mystery Colorwork KAL! I promised my husband I'd finish 5 of my almost finisheded UFO's before I cast on the East Meets West satc… Continue

Sigh, my company has gone...

Yes, my company has left me, so my mind returns yet again to what could the Colorwork Mystery KAL actually be? And my fingers fairly itch to catch up... I received my red colorway of the East Meets West Bag in the mail on Saturday! Along with a new stash of books. Along that note, I'm thinking of making a vow, goal, commitment, whatever you may, to not buy another book until I make 1 item from a certain number of books I already own at this minute. I originally thought all of them, but that woul… Continue

I found Fresh Knit Doilies by Larisa Scott (Leisure Arts #3893) at my local Five-and-Dime and have been introduced to a whole new world that I didn’t know existed. I searched ‘lace knitting’ on Ebay about 3 or 4 months ago and was completely blown away. I had never heard of Herbert Niebling, and all the other great lace designers (that I can’t remember the names of right now because I’m tired). I can’t really believe there is such beauty in the world made by human hands. I knew it existed in fauna and flora, but I didn’t know it could be translated into a flat, meshy mass of tangles and be transformed into something that would just absolutely make you gasp and pee your pants. My current goal in life right now is to try my hand at making my own designs. I’m sure it will result in hilarity and hair pulling, but I think I’m ready. If I could only get my 4 year old to stop talking for a few more minutes a day, I may be able to knit a test swatch once in a while… I really want to design and knit doilies and tablecloths… I am smitten!

Thanks much for the link--I downloaded one of the beautiful shawls on her site, not sure if it was the same, but lovely!! There are lots of those georgeous motifs (as on your pot holder) in the charted patterns of Norway --big and beautiful!!

Is Windbraut Spitzbergen Shawl on Ravelry--I can't find it in the pattern search??

It's Primula p.40, Meg's Handknitting. She got most of it from Kinzel's First book of Modern Lace knitting.--it's not a difficult knit--just those slippery needles!! Just finished A last night--a mass of holes!! I'll have to check Ravelry for that pattern you mentioned!! Meg calls them Mananita --has the two patterns, the other is Peacock--you leave out the center, so the hole is big enough for the head!! Kind of a head-start on the doily--sorry about the joke, I'm on my first cup of coffee this AM!!

Mindless knitting is great therapy!! One I pursue regularly!! I've just started a lace shawl out of Meg's Handknitting. My first lace-weight knitting--it's on #10 needles and slow going--my Options are a bit slick, may have to invest in some Harmony circs.--or maybe I can conquer these!! I'm supposed to be working on my EMW bag--can you say procrastinate??!! Actually, I'm supposed to be working on an applique quilt and several pieced ones--but, knitting has seized my attention!! Love those challenges!!--happy needling!!

Peggy, I think it will work our well, also. I'm looking for washability... ease of care for my DDIL... she is a veteranarian, and once back to work, won't have time for special care items, I'm thinking.

From what I understand there is some sewing together at the end... you attach the strips as you go... I like that concept...

My grandson's room has been painted an ivory (though my DS is color blind and almost painted it a horribly bright green - my DDIL stopped him before he got too far along in that process - apparently he perceived the two colors as almost alike) and they have selected green as the color of curtains, bedding and accessories. My DDIL likes warm colors... so she goes with browns and beiges for almost everything. I'm sure you saw the diaper bag and purse I knitted and felted for her. I have several items already finished. Hope to get the BSJ done before next Sunday - the baby shower. --S

Peggy, I do not know how to knit backwards... thought in my mind I think I know... if that makes sense. It is all garter stitch... I am using a bulky cotton yarn, all solids... and plan to stagger the colors - creams, browns and reds... I have this brown/red thing in my mind for babies and just can't get it out... LOL I thought you might like the pattern since it seems to lay pretty flat. --S

Pickle Peg: Yes, I was going to wait, but I thought, I'll just see if I can CO. (I could, even though it was a little unwieldy.) Then I thought, I'll just do a couple of rows a day. I should be working on DH's FI sleeveless cardi for Christmas, but it's two-handed knitting, and my gauge might be a little different with the cast and all, so a couple of rows a day on the BSJ is good exercise and will keep me from getting bored. --P

I checked Ravelry, and saved a couple of the pattens... there were two or three that really caught my eye... one looked liked twigs coming from the center.... I tried to find that on Ravelry, but could not tell for sure which was which... several did not have pics... His lace patterns are exceptional. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. --S
