About Me:

I've been knitting--Continental style--for almost half a century, and I generally feel able to knit anything that strikes my fancy. Even so, there's always so much more to learn about what can be done with two sticks and a string! I'm absolutely hooked on Kelley's podcasts, because even when the topic sounds pretty mundane, she's always got something fresh and interesting to say about it.

That's Cesare with me in the photograph--one of two cats named after the Borgias. Being an utter monster, he's very well named. I can't think why so many knitters are cat lovers, when one considers that cats are the natural enemy of knitting.

Evening with the Yarn Harlot

Just got back from a signing with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. She's even better in person than she is in her writing, in the sense that her comic timing and delivery are absolutely impeccable. She even had the booksellers rolling in the aisles, and they clearly had a good time at the event. (I used to work at that bookstore, and I know these people. Greencastle Fleece Fair

Went to the Fleece Fair in Greencastle, Indiana last Friday with my partners in crime. I had never been to one of those events before, and am I ever glad I went! Not only did I score on yarn, but I picked up a good dyeing tip that I can't wait to try. It turns out that you can dye wool with fiber-reactive dye without cooking it, so you don't have to worry about the pigment's breaking down. New Knitting Resolution

OK, so I just frogged the first 85 rows of my Corner to Corner Shawl. "Why did you do that, Roxane?" I hear you ask. Well. I had screwed up at some point--I'm guessing at about row 70 or so--so I intended to dutifully unknit about 15 rows. Gentle reader, it is very hard to unknit a lace pattern on laceweight yarn (Alpaca Cloud in this case) on size 3 needles. My eyes really aren't up to it any more, even though my eye doctor says I'm 20/20 with my glasses, and even the point of the Harmony wood… Continue

This young woman uses the park-and-draft method, which slows down the process so it's doable.
Then I took a class in spinning with a wheel. The best lesson, though, was the one with my friend Lynda. She switched me to long-draw and a fiber with more crimp. With the long-draw method, you don't have to pinch your fingers, but keep them loose, and you use your would-be pinching hand to twist the fibers in the same direction as the twist from the wheel, which moves the twist up toward the drafting triangle, which you move slowly away with your other hand, holding the fiber loosely. I have a long way to go, but I think I'm getting the idea. --Peggy

I've only been knitting a short time, but I have found so many errors in printed patterns and I can't figure out what to do about this one. I would appreciate your advice.
