About Me:
I've been a knitter for about 20 years and have a degree in Communications Design. I've worked in various facets of the garment and fashion industry, and am naturally fascinated with form, function, materials, and math. Not a bad combination for a Garment Designer!

I love the Pacific Northwest and the great outdoors in general. I almost always wear hiking boots just in case an opportunity to use them arises. I also love to cook, make jewelry, and sew.

I started my own little 'victory garden' in my yard this year. My strawberries, blueberries and tomatoes are already getting buds!

Don't believe that groundhog!

Maybe it's just foolish optimism, maybe it's the strangely calm winter we're having here in the Pacific NW... But I say, spring is coming early! Early, I say! Hear that nature?

Why so excited about spring? Well, because I can show off my Fancy Feet!

Roxy Lady!

I must admit, there's something about foxes that I think is totally adorable. I think of them as 'puppy kittens'. Just too cute! So, when we were all throwing ideas back and forth about what would make a cute stuffed animal, it just had to be a fox! When I went to swatch to get gauge for Roxy Fox, I couldn't stop. I ended up with most of Roxy and both her pups.

It's in the bag!

There are a lot of bag kits available for fall! Bags are a great way to learn new techniques without worrying about whether the finished product needs to fit. But, they often require a lot of finishing and findings that you wouldn't ordinarily use for a garment. And, since a bag can really be a great statement piece or say a lot about its wearer, finding unique purse hardware can really add to the impact!

So, where do you start? Well, take the… Continue

It's the most colorful time of the year

I don't know about you, but when I catch that first whiff of fall, all I can think is COLORWORK!

There's just something about the changing seasons that makes me want to sit back with a cup of coffee and several richly colored yarns and make some knitted art. I've started my very own… Continue

There's a new girl in town!

You may have noticed that Mr. Foster finally met that special someone...

Carmen Banana!

He was just gushing about her when he came back from his last trip. He was just minding his own business, taking some time off, when she strolled around the corner and into his life. He wouldn'… Continue

By "the Kit" I mean the "East Meets West Bag"; sorry for the confusion I copy and pasted this from the KAL Colorworks site for this project.

I was just looking at this kit on the KP site and am thinking about ordering it. I was also going to order the needles; the pattern says it uses size 1(2.50 mm) in 32" and 60"-is this correct and if so will Knitpicks start selling 60" circulars? The longest you carry is 47", will this work? I don't want to order this until I know for sure what needles I will need. Thanks for the help :-)

Kerin,
I'm knitting the Calluna cardigan and having some trouble understanding the diagonal rib. I seem to have a mental block with the directions under bodice patterning, where it says "the pattern will mirror itself at underarms and on either side of front closure and moss panel on back".
I am knitting a size 44 so I have to deal with increases at the side seams also. Would you be so kind and give me some more instruction on how to do a round of the diagonal rib with increases? I've tried several times and had to rip it back. Something is just not clicking in my brain.
I've looked at all of the messages about this cardigan and I seem to be the only one with this issue! I've also checked on Ravelry and no one addressed my question there either.
Thanks so much.

Hi Kerin! I have a garment design question for you. I have a garment in mind that I want to make with just the basic idea from a commercial pattern. I have absolutely no idea how many skeins of yarn I will need (though I know it will be a lot). My question is this: How do you estimate how many yards a certain number of stitches will use up given a certain gauge? I'm certain there must be some math I can do to estimate this, but I have found no reference to such a calculation anywhere. Let me know if you can help me. My email address is amy.w.lu@gmail.com if that is convenient. Thanks!

Hi from snowy Spokane, I am having a great amount of trouble with the Salish coat pattern. I am st the BO on the first page and am wondering it binding off and not sure if that is 5befor each marker (2) or at either end of the piece. If you have time, read the directions and maybe email me at cme@icehouse.net. I love your products but these directions are really hard.
Thanks
