About Me:
I am the marketing assistant at Knit Picks.

I inadvertently learned to knit 5 years ago, because I was washing camping gear at a laundromat across the street from a yarn store. I wandered over to the yarn store while my sleeping bag was drying, and then...well, I caught the knitting bug and I work at Knit Picks now!

I went to college in San Diego, and since I moved to the Pacific Northwest, I've been on a sweater kick because I'm usually freezing. I studied architecture in college, and I especially like the math and structure behind knitted garments. I like all sorts of knitting techniques, but especially unusual garment construction.

Since I started working here, I'm learning all sorts of crafts. I'm learning to spin, weave, and do piecework.

    Crafty Vacation

I went home to Northern California for Christmas, and although I've been back for a week, I haven't had a chance to blog about it until now! While in Northern California, I took a day trip to San Francisco to visit friends from college and to check out some art museums. I know that there is quite a bit of debate within the knitting community about what is art and what is craft and whether knitting should be recognized as an art. Still, I kept seeing folk art and traditional crafts in art museums… Continue

Incorporate knitting into your gift wrapping

Have you finished all of your Christmas gifts yet? I'm working on a double knit argyle scarf that probably won't make the deadline, but we made a video to share ideas to incorporate knitting into your holiday gift wrapping. Whether you want use scraps of yarn to wrap your gift, personalize a gift card, include knitted ornaments with a gift, or make a last minute IOU placeholder gift, we have ideas for you!

    For reference, those are… Continue

    Miss Eiderdown's Stocking pattern

    Hi Everyone!

Have you all listened to parts 1 and 2 of Miss Eiderdown's Stocking holiday story?

When I listened to the story, I was inspired to knit a special Christmas stocking of my own. We released a Miss Eiderdown's Stocking pattern, knit with… Continue

    My largest knitting project

I am knitting an enormous wool blanket. It is almost halfway finished.

I have no cold tolerance. I'm the one wearing a giant puffy coat when everyone else is wearing a light jacket. When I'm riding my bicycle in the cold, I'm completely covered with my coat and knitwear, except for my glasses peeking out between the cowl over my nose and my hat. So when I moved to… Continue

    Thanks for the welcome, Kate.

The drop spindling is very addictive & so much easier to justify adding a new spindle than a new wheel (and easier to sneak into the house) I love the Jenkins spindles! Have you seen one of their Kuchulus yet? Teeny tiny..about 1/3 the size of a Turkish Delight and they spin the finest of yarns forever. It's impossible not to smile when you have a beautiful tool & some beautiful fiber to spin.

Thanks for the kind words about my Hanae hat pattern! I'm glad you got to see it in person, too -- that Shine Sport feels so wonderful and squishy!

Kate- Thanks for your comment about my 'watercolor' knitting. I plan on trying some more of that... I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your post about your blanket. I bet it seems never-ending? It is beautiful! My sister would love for me to make one of those for her! But 63 balls of yarn! Whew! We'll love to see the finished item!

You directed me on my page to the tutorial for reading lace charts. Hmmmm...I re-read it and finally figured out my problem: I'm horribly dyslexic and I can't "see" the chart well enough to decipher it! Normally I can adapt to situations requiring reading and following instructions so it didn't dawn on me until today what my problem was. I am not able to follow any kind of chart-like document and knitting charts are no different. I have somehow naturally chosen patterns that are written out rather than in chart form but didn't put it all together until now. So thanks! You helped me figure this out, though I still can't read a chart! LOL

The red sweater in your city tweed photos is gorgeous! What is the pattern?

i too love the math involved in knitting (nd so many other fiber arts and crafts, such as quilting) ANd i also love the aspects of garment constructions. I used to be into sewing period garments, with all the fitting going on there. ...I am starting to get ideas about using short rows to make a very fitted outfit, perhaps my super-hero costume, LMBO!!!!
