Options Needles
Many of you have asked about the actual size of the Knit Picks Options needle tips and how they work. Below are some close up photos of the mechanics:
Each needle tip is 4.5″ long. Here is a lifesize photo (US 10.5/6.5 mm):

The needle tip has a hollow base that is grooved
to accept the threaded stem of the cable.
The tip and cable screw together to form a
smooth join that your stitches can pass over with ease.
To ensure the most secure fit, use the cable
key. Inserting it in the hole at the base of the cable allows you
to gain the leverage you need to tighten the needle tip.
You can also interchange the needle tips
with handy end caps. This allows you to use the same size needle
tips for multiple projects at one time. When you need the tips for
another piece of knitting, just unscrew them and screw end caps on
in their places. Your stitches will remain safe and secure on the
cable until you return to them. Additionally, you can use the end
caps to create “straight” needles by screwing a needle tip on one
end and a cap on the other. This is an improvement on traditional
straight needles because the flexible cable allows the knitting to
hang down and rest in your lap. Your wrists will appreciate not
having to support a large piece of knitting as it grows.
